Credits, Placements and more
Course Credit by Examination
Students may receive college credit for some TTU courses through dual credit courses in high school, the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), the Advanced Placement (AP) Examination, or the International Baccalaureate (IB) examination. The student is responsible for taking any tests early enough to allow sufficient time for scores to be reported to the university and processed by the Admissions Office. Students may attempt a CLEP examination at any national CLEP testing center before enrolling and have the scores reported to the university. For additional information about required scores and possible credit earned, please refer to TTU Undergraduate Catalog section entitled "Undergraduate Credit by Exam" or visit http://www.depts.ttu.edu/testing/uce.php. Students may attempt CLEP testing at TTU’s Academic Testing Services (806) 742-3671 while on campus, though it is preferred to have this taken care of before orientation.
Students intending to take Chemistry and/or Math are required to take placement exams prior to Red Raider Orientation unless the student already has received college level credit in the subject. Many students will come to the university with college credit for freshman English (ENGL 1301 and 1302) in one of the following ways:
Mathematics and Logical Reasoning
Placement of students into entry-level mathematics courses (MATH 0301-2345) is based on either appropriate previous prerequisite college math credit (including AP or dual credit) or the results of the TTU Math Placement Exam (MPE). Students who have scored at least 610 (660 for 1351) on the SATM (math portion) or at least 26 (29 for 1351) on the ACTM (math portion) are exempt from the MPE and may enroll in any entry-level math course independent of whether they have the appropriate prerequisite college math credit or the appropriate MPE score. All students (unless exempt) should take the MPE online (http://www.math.ttu.edu/placement/eraider/) BEFORE attending an orientation session.
Natural Laboratory Science
All Tech students need credit for at least two lab science courses. Any student required to take CHEM 1307 (Principles of Chemistry) must take the Texas Tech University Chemistry Placement Examination (CPE). A score of 18 or more out of 35 (greater than 50%) on the Placement Exam places a student into CHEM 1307. A score of 17 or less out of 35 (less than 50%) places a student into the preparatory course, CHEM 1301. Please check with your department level advisor to learn if CHEM 1307 is required for your major. Students who do not pass the Chemistry Placement Examination but score close to passing are eligible to enroll in the Chemistry Bridge Course being offered by the Chemistry Department. By successfully completing the Bridge Course, students will be able to skip CHEM 1301 and enroll in CHEM 1307 directly for the fall. Core Curriculum Requirements
Every Texas Tech student, regardless of major, must take certain “core curriculum” courses in order to graduate. These courses include requirements in written communication, oral communication, mathematics and logical reasoning, natural laboratory science, technology and applied science, U.S. history, political science, individual and group behavior, humanities, and visual and performing arts. There is also a multicultural requirement that may be fulfilled through study abroad or specific courses at Texas Tech. You can find detailed information about core curriculum requirements in the Texas Tech University Undergraduate Catalog. These courses are often taken in the first two years of college work. Remember the Core Curriculum Requirements are minimums—that is, your specific degree plan may require more courses in a particular area. Refer to your major in the Undergraduate Catalog for specific information, and discuss with an advisor anything about which you are unclear.
Understanding Course Information
As you prepare for advising, you will look at course offerings. The university posts course offerings on MyTech at www.raiderlink.ttu.edu . Keep in mind all students who were enrolled at Tech this spring have already registered for courses, so not every class will be available.
As you will see, each course has a designation of four, three, or two letters (called a prefix). For example, the prefix for math courses is MATH, the prefix for history courses is HIST, and the prefix for English courses is ENGL.
Each course has a four-digit number. The first digit gives information about the academic level of the course (i.e., freshman, sophomore, junior, senior level denoted by a “1,” “2,” “3,” or “4,” respectively). All students at Texas Tech may enroll in any level course for which they meet the prerequisites (courses for which a student must have credit before enrolling in the next course), however, freshmen are strongly encouraged to consult with an academic advisor prior to enrolling in junior and senior level courses. Prerequisites are listed in the course descriptions in the Undergraduate Catalog. The second digit of the number gives information about the number of semester credit hours the course is worth. The third and fourth numbers are distinguishing departmental numbers of the particular course. (See the second column in the following table for an example.)
Each class is also assigned a “section number,” which is a three-digit number following the course number. (See the third column in the table below.)
Each entry on the open class list tells the time and day(s) each class will meet (note that “R” means “Thursday”), and the building and room number in which the class will meet.

1. Finding out which textbooks you need.
· Go to www.raiderlink.ttu.edu, log in using your username and password, then click the MyTech (For Students) tab at the top.
· In the middle column, there is a box labeled Student Services. Listed in this box is a link that says “Order Your TTU Textbooks Now!” Click this link.
· A red box will open that basically says, although Barnes and Noble is encouraged, Texas Tech can’t legally require you to buy textbooks from a certain retailer. In the bottom right corner of this box is a gray box that says “Get all the textbooks for the classes you just registered for.” Click this box.
· Another window should open with a complete list of your textbooks and their ISBN numbers. This process only works following actual registration of classes so you will need to do this after you register on Day 3 of RRO.
2. Buying/Renting textbooks.
Take the ISBN numbers provided in the steps above, type them into Amazon, and order the cheapest books you can find. All of your books will be available at any Texas Tech bookstore, so you can buy them once you are here in August. You can also order them on the internet from Barnes and Noble, and they will have them ready for you when you come in the fall. A new thing is renting textbooks, and this will save a lot of money. Obviously, don’t do this for textbooks you want to keep, because you’ll have to return them. This option is available through most of the bookstores in Lubbock and also online (chegg.com). As long as you have your ISBN numbers, you can order your books as you please.
3. Selling back books.
If you rent textbooks, you won’t have to worry about this. If you buy, you will probably want to sell them back. You will quickly find that most books lose a great amount of retail value the minute you walk out of the store with them. The best time to sell back is as soon as you finish the course.
