  1. Be Confident! Most students attitude towards a class dictate their success in the class. Have a spirit of conquering the class and enter the class with confidence of succeeding.
  2. Take Notes! As college students there are plenty things that take place in your mind, taking notes is the key essential of memorizing lectures.
  3. Organize your time! Organize each goal to the level of importance it has. Take time for your self to do whatever you want to do. Set time to study, Study when it is best for you, study with a clear mind, free from distractions and take breaks when study, or start a study group.
  4. Get involved! It is statistically shown that college students who are involved in any extracurricular activities are more likely to be better students.
  5. Procrastinate, No MORE! Some college students do well under pressure, however setting time to complete one task will give the college student more ease to focus on different task(s) and will also ease the stress level.
  6. Intern! Apply what you learn in college in a work environment, learn hands on what you want to do for the rest of your life. You may want to consider utilizing the Terry Alumni (TAP) list when considering internship opportunities.
  7. Communicate! Develop a constant communication with your professors, and classmates. Communicate with your professor so that (s)he will know you personally to discover your academic strengths and weakness(es). Communicate with your classmates because you never know when you'll need them.
  8. Manage Your Money. Pay your bills for the semester when your Terry money comes in. Create a budget for the semester and stick to it.
  9. Know your limits! Sometimes you will have to withdraw from courses, if it is better in drastic cases to withdraw from a certain course than fail it then do so. If you need a tutor get one. Know your limit. Ask for assistance.
  10. Becoming a college student isn't about good grades it is about your mindset. Remember it is all about application. You get back what you put out. Having a positive mindset and applying your positive mind will help you become a successful students.

Terry Foundation Orientation

8/27/2013

Today was a busy day for things Terry. The Terry Foundation team themselves paid a visit to "their favorite" Texas Tech University. They were here to explain what it means to be a Terry Scholar, how to be successful in your first year on campus, and to allow all of the Texas Tech Terry's to mingle. All 94 Terry's were present for the orientation and were engaged in both the group session and the individual breakout session which split freshmen Terry scholars and Transfer Terry students. Here are a few of the moments captured from this exciting day.

Terry Day: A success story

Welcome '13 Terry's!!

Picture
Today's Terry day was a day full of information, food and fun! The day began with a game where new terry's put stickers with random celebrities on their head in an attempt to guess who they were. Some of the more entertaining guesses were Oprah, Kliff Kingsbury, and our very own (and very patriotic) Kyle Wolfe. Next, the Terry Foundation funded pizza and drinks for the Terry Mentors and their mentees to snack on. This was followed by the Terry Mentors covering issues that ranged from the Lubbock area to student finances. By the end of the day, much was learned and much fun was had by all!

The Legacy of Grover Murray

Picture
The Texas Tech Terry group successfully hosted the first of this year's Leadership Speaking Series when Sally Murray came to tell the story of her late husband and Texas Tech's 8th president, Grover E. Murray. Mrs Murray spoke of Grover with a passion that was extremely contagious to all who were present.
Picture
Sally Murray spoke on the horse that can be seen in front of Murray Hall:
Grover Murray compared his presidency to this horse. His work wasn't done, but he was able to accomplish enough to be proud of
Sally Murray also compared this statue to Terry Scholars as individuals. Terry's are given a great foundation through their scholarship, but it is up to every individual scholar to build on that foundation.
PictureHere, Sally Murray is showing a globe which highlights the travels of Grover Murray. Dr. Murray loved to travel and spent a lot of time in Australia in his later years.

August 14, 2013

Dear Terry Foundation Campus Facilitators:

The Terry Foundation announces today the addition of Texas A&M University at Galveston and Sam Houston State University to the Foundation’s scholarship program. Scholarships will be available for freshman students at these universities beginning with the 2014-2015 academic year.

This expansion brings Terry Scholarships to a total of eleven Texas universities – and continues the proud legacy of Howard and Nancy Terry and the educational foundation they created. We look forward to seeing the Terry Scholar program implemented at these prestigious educational institutions.

Dress Code: Orientation

8/1/2013

Wondering what to wear to the Terry Foundation Orientation?

 What is business casual anyway?

Business casual is crisp, neat, and should look appropriate even for a chance meeting with a CEO. It should NOT look like cocktail or party or picnic attire. Avoid tight or baggy clothing; business casual is classic rather than trendy.
