aN Invitation to Join the McLane Scholars Program

11/18/2014

The Free Market Institute (FMI) is pleased to invite applications to the inaugural McLane Scholars Program. The McLane Scholars Program is a one semester, non-credit reading group in which undergraduate students will read and discuss selections from classic works in political economy and from contemporary scholars that address the relationships between and among entrepreneurship, economic freedom and social progress. The theme for the spring 2015 program is ‘Freedom and Entrepreneurship.’

Participants can expect to encounter the works of Adam Smith, John Maynard Keynes and other giants of economics both past and present in discussions about the role of entrepreneurship in the history of economic thought, debates about whether capitalism is prone to creating volatile business cycles, and examinations of the relationship between entrepreneurship and economic development, among other topics.

The group will meet on Wednesday evenings from 5:00 – 6:30 PM in the FMI Conference Room (TTU Plaza, 1901 University Ave., Suite 308) for Socratic-style discussions focused on particular topics related to the broader themes of freedom and entrepreneurship. The meetings will be facilitated by a Texas Tech University faculty member, but ultimately focused on promoting debate and discussion between and among the student participants.

Participants that successfully complete the program will receive a $1,000 stipend.

The FMI will accept applications from current undergraduate students until Tuesday, December 23, 2014. For more information about the program, tentative schedule (with list of discussion topics) and application procedure, please visit the FMI’s Student Programs page.

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, please direct them to the FMI at free.market@ttu.edu or 806.742.7138.

Continued growth in the Foundation endowment made possible additional program expansion in 2013 when the Board approved a new component to the program:  scholarships for students transferring completed college hours to any of the participating Terry universities. The Terry Transfer Program commenced in June, 2013 with the selection of 158 Terry Transfer Scholars, launching the largest program in the state specifically designed to assist transfer students. In 2014, Foundation interviews resulted in the selection of 193 additional Transfer Scholars. These transfer recipients will join the 2014 Terry freshmen and upper-class Scholars to number 1,316 Terry Scholars enrolled for the 2014-2015 academic year.

New Scholarship Opportunities Provided for Students

11/2/2014

Students accepted to Texas Tech will now be eligible for increased scholarship opportunities through the Terry Foundation beginning in the fall of 2011.

Officials at Texas Tech announced today (Dec. 7) the establishment of the Terry Foundation Scholarship program, which will be housed in the Honors College and will partner with the university to provide its students with enhanced resources for personal, professional and civic success.

“I’m particularly pleased that the Terry Foundation has chosen to provide scholarship opportunities for Texas Tech University students,” President Guy Bailey said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with the Terry Foundation before and have enormous respect for the Foundation’s commitment to higher education in Texas and for what it has achieved.”

“Texas Tech University has a long-established history of providing its students with a high-quality education, graduating generations of leaders,” Texas Tech System Chancellor Kent Hance said. “We have the caliber of scholars the Terry Foundation supports, and Texas Tech is very grateful to have the foundation’s scholarship program investing in our students.”

The announcement comes after the directors of the Terry Foundation Board voted unanimously at its November meeting to expand the scholarship program to include students at Texas Tech.

“We are delighted to announce the establishment of the Terry Foundation Scholarship program at Texas Tech University,” the Terry Foundation President Edward T. Cotham Jr. said. “Texas Tech University joins seven other outstanding Texas universities in hosting the largest private scholarship program in the state.”

“Terry Scholars at Texas Tech will benefit from the university’s outstanding academic programs and growing national reputation for excellence. We are honored to be associated with an institution of such prominence and look forward to the first Texas Tech scholarship awards in the fall of 2011.”

Since it was founded in 1986, the Terry Foundation has assisted more than 2,400 Texas college students to achieve their goals in higher education. Scholarships provided by the foundation are based on the cost of attendance and cover tuition, book, fees and reasonable living expenses on campus. The actual specific amount of the stipend will vary for each scholar, depending on the other scholarship awards and the ability of the scholar’s family to contribute to the cost of college.

In conjunction with nominations from representatives of Texas Tech, the foundation board members will review applications and interview around 32 students next spring who have been accepted at Texas Tech. From those students interviewed, approximately half of the group will be selected as the first class of Terry Scholars at Texas Tech.

To apply for the Terry Scholarship, entering freshmen students for fall 2011 should complete the Apply Texas Application for Admissions and Scholarships. Along with other qualifications, applicants must be a 2011 graduate of a Texas high school or Texas home school, have admission to Texas Tech University as a full-time student for the 2011-2012 academic year and reside on campus their first year of college.

The priority deadline for completed applications is January 14, 2011, and the final deadline is February 1, 2011 at midnight. More information about the Terry Scholars Program at Texas Tech is available at Texas Tech’s Scholarship website or can be obtained by calling the scholarship office at (806) 742-3144 ext. 270.

The Terry Foundation is a Houston-based scholarship program founded to provide scholarships to outstanding Texas High school graduates for attendance at public colleges and universities within the state. Established by Houston philanthropists Howard and Nancy Terry, the foundation has assisted thousands of Terry Scholars in meeting the founders’ goal of helping young people to help themselves.
