Thank you: Fuel the Love

Thank you to all who came out to help during our Fuel the Love week. Our partnership with the SHIELD Scholars from Phillips 66 and Golden Key Honour Society was a huge success. Here are a few things we did during that week:
  • fed the residents at Paul's Project
  • decorated for the Junior High dances,
  • fed the teachers
  • fed the volunteer firefighters
  • took a meal to the Ronald McDonald House

The impact you made on our community was evident.

Upcoming Projects

Arbor Day is an annual event that provides an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to join together to beautify the Tech campus, build a sense of community, and receive recognition. Live music, free food and t-shirts, and planting alongside other Red Raiders makes this one of the most anticipated events each spring.

Tech to Town serves as a one-day event that brings students, faculty, and staff out into the Lubbock Community to serve, impact, and strengthen the bonds between Texas Tech University and the City of Lubbock. Texas Tech University is grateful for the support and care that the City of Lubbock provides throughout the year, and this is just a small way to say thank you.

Linda Swindling

Lind told us that, everybody negotiates. You’ve negotiated to get your job. You’ve negotiated with teachers or group members. You’ve negotiated with vendors. You’ve negotiated with your spouse, with your kids, with your neighbors, and maybe even with your dog! If you think about it… everything is a negotiation and nearly everything is negotiable.
She shared research-backed tactics and proven strategies, from her experience in the courtroom and the boardroom, to help us as leaders show up powerfully to negotiate for the best deals at work and in life with confidence and integrity.

Leadership Book Club

We are hosting a leadership book club, called Wow Wednesday on the Ones in partnership with the Phillips 66 SHIELD Scholars, the Golden Key International Honour Society, Helene DeVitt Jones Scholars, and the Terry Scholars. We will meet face to face everyone week Wednesday at 11 or 1 (schedule below) and on the off weeks we will be meeting online.

We will be reading the classic “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. This 275 page book is packed full of advice on how to get along smoothly with others while gaining what you want.

How to Win Friends and Influence People presents 30 chapters on broad topics such as how to make people like you and how to be a leader without causing offense or resentment. Individual topics are illuminated by positive, real-life anecdotes about well-known business leaders and politicians, as well as everyday individuals. Each chapter ends with a single statement that summarizes the main point, making it easy for readers to review the most important take-home messages at a glance. Carnegie recommends reviewing the principles on a regular basis as a continual reminder to build them into everyday life.

The 5 Types of Mentors You Need in Your Life

Picture
Here’s how to assemble your personal dream team, with tips from business expert Anthony Tjan.

Everyone can use a mentor. Scratch that — as it turns out, we could all use five mentors. “The best mentors can help us define and express our inner calling,” says Anthony Tjan, CEO of Boston venture capital firm Cue Ball Group and author of Good People. “But rarely can one person give you everything you need to grow.”
